STICKER SAVES

Seeing many two wheeler riders  , scooterists

and motorcyclists forgetting to lift the side stand I used to go after them to remind them . My pulse would shoot as I took off after such souls fearing I may not be able to get to them on the crowded road before they disappeared on some side street .

There was an added danger of me meeting up with an accident during this chase.

Many a times in a day there would be 2-3 such sitings on the 28 kms of my daily travel from home to  office & back. This made me think of the statistical chance of leaving the side stand open. Having read Dr. Daniel Schacter's book " How The Mind Remembers and Forgets " I understood that people won't be able to remember to take their stand off even after  having suffered an accident because of such lapse I tried to find such devices in the market which could be fixed to the vehicle . Alas I could find none .

Few two wheelers come with devices showing side stand warning. Leaving the case of a LML mobike model which had gear clutch getting hooked by the side stand in open position all were electronic .

One fine day it dawned on me that pilots use a lot of check lists before they take off. So why cant a mobike / scooter rider do the same . Immideately I set off to the sticker making shop and got a few made .

Putting one such sticker on the fuel tank or the dash board of my friends I tried the idea. Till now in the last 8 months none of the 100 plus friends have reported having failed to take off their stands.

It cost me just Rs. 3 for a sticker .
Till the time our two wheeler manufacturers who don't install a  have a safety mechanism on their vehiclesthis should do .

In my view no vehicle should be allowed to be sold without safety devise. Secondly , in addition to all electronic devises a check out sign should be put on the dashboard.

Donating such stickers to riders would help the cause . Four wheelers can put bigger stickers at the back of their vehicles to remind the 2 wheel drivers .
